From Talia King, Director of Lending at MCCD
Community development leaders, financial institutions, funders, and policymakers from across Minnesota recently gathered for the 2026 Minnesota CDFI Coalition Conference. The event was an opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and discuss how we can collectively expand access to capital and opportunity in the communities we serve.
Throughout the conference, one message resonated: community development finance plays a vital role in creating economic opportunity. However, speakers emphasized that CDFIs are not simply providers of capital. They are trusted partners in helping entrepreneurs start and grow businesses, supporting affordable housing, and advancing community ownership. And there are many moving pieces that make this work and its impact possible.
The Importance of Advocacy and Data-Driven Storytelling
Speakers stressed that policymakers rely on insights from organizations working directly with communities. Borrower success stories, community impact data, economic growth, and the challenges we encounter on the ground all help shape future decisions. The lesson was simple but powerful: our collective experiences matter, and sharing them ensures that community voices remain part of the conversation.
For community development organizations, these high-quality, data-driven stories do more than satisfy reporting requirements. They also support responsive decision-making and planning, while showing how investment creates opportunity and strengthens communities.
Strong, Collaborative Relationships Drive Lasting Impact
Whether working with borrowers, investors, funders, public agencies, or community partners, trust remains the foundation of successful community development work. Speakers emphasized that transparency, communication, and collaboration often matter just as much as outcomes themselves.
Participants also discussed the continued growth and leadership of the Minnesota CDFI Coalition, along with opportunities to strengthen statewide advocacy efforts, improve impact reporting, increase visibility, and explore collaborative approaches to funding and investment. While individual organizations create meaningful change every day, our impact becomes stronger when we learn, advocate, and work with one another toward shared goals.
In an environment that continues to evolve, relationships help organizations navigate uncertainty, solve challenges, and create opportunities that would be difficult to achieve alone.
Balancing Mission and Sustainability is Essential
Panelists explored the realities facing many community lenders today, including monitoring portfolio performance and emerging risks, supporting borrowers, and balancing mission impact with long-term organizational sustainability.
Funders and investors increasingly recognize the complexity of this work. While strong portfolio management remains essential, there is also an understanding that successful mission-driven lending requires flexibility and is strengthened by responsiveness, collaboration, partnership, and a long-term perspective.
Looking Ahead
While the community development sector continues to navigate change, the overall tone of the conference was one of optimism, resilience, and momentum.
Across Minnesota, organizations remain committed to expanding economic opportunity, supporting entrepreneurs, increasing access to housing and capital, and investing in communities that have historically been underserved. The conference served as an important reminder that this work is strengthened through partnership, collaboration, and a shared commitment to impact.
We encourage community partners, funders, practitioners, and stakeholders across Minnesota to stay engaged with the Coalition’s work, participate in future events, and continue supporting efforts that strengthen the community development finance ecosystem throughout our state. Together, we can continue building stronger businesses, neighborhoods, and communities.
