The people shaping our neighborhoods should reflect the people living in them. That’s why MCCD invests in BIPOC leaders at every stage of their careers — helping them grow, connect, and lead lasting change.
Our Community Development Leadership Center convenes training, mentoring and networking spaces for leaders at all stages to learn practical skills and cultivate authentic relationships to collectively advance community development as a tool for racial and economic justice.
To build equitable communities, we need to connect current and future leaders to share their ingenuity and insight, and respond to their unique professional needs with relevant training, relational cohorts and one-on-one mentoring.
From new advocates to executive directors, the Center will advance leaders who embed principles and practices of equity and justice through the sector.
The Leadership Center includes popular initiatives like the Emerging Leaders in Community Development mentorship program and the annual Policy and Advocacy Trainings — and develop new pathways for growth, like the State Policy Cohort.
Founded in 2011 by a group of community development professionals, ELCD is a free, six-month program for early- and mid-career leaders. The program offers mentorship, training, and networking opportunities to help participants build skills, expand their networks, and strengthen their leadership in the field. Over the years, ELCD has supported more than 300 alumni, many of whom have gone on to lead organizations, shape policy, and drive equitable development across Minnesota.

Launched in 2025, this hands-on training is designed for BIPOC professionals who want to learn more about policy development and how to effectively navigate and influence state-level policy. The cohort takes a deep dive into the mechanics and behind-the-scenes of policymaking and includes guidance on understanding, writing, and advocating for equitable policies at the Minnesota State Legislature, through a group learning and networking environment.
Launching in 2026, the Advanced Leaders in Community Development Program is designed to equip mid-career leaders with the practical skills and networks required for effective executive level leadership. The program focuses on supporting practitioners often excluded from senior-level positions and builds a pipeline of exceptional leaders ready to assume roles within community development organizations, public agencies, and other institutions that influence strategies and direct affordable housing and small business development investments.
The Leadership Center is dedicated to supporting professionals in the community development sector by offering a dynamic space for growth, learning, and professional advancement. Serving professionals at all stages of their careers, the Center provides a range of training and educational opportunities designed to enhance skills, knowledge, and leadership capacities for practitioners interested in building skills, but are not engaged in formal cohorts.
